Figure Skating Policies

Program guidelines, expectations, and safety standards

Registration & Membership

  • All skaters must be registered members of U.S. Figure Skating
  • Annual registration must be completed before the first session
  • Proof of membership must be submitted to the Skating Director
  • Skaters under 18 must have a parent or guardian complete all registration forms

Registration for the 2026-2027 season opens June 1, 2026. Early registration ensures placement in preferred session times.

On-Ice Etiquette

  • Skaters in a program lesson have the right of way
  • Skaters performing their program to music have the right of way during freestyle sessions
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times — look before jumping or spinning
  • No standing in groups or blocking traffic flow on the ice
  • Warm-up and cool-down should be done in designated areas
  • No food, gum, or drinks (other than water) on the ice surface

Code of Conduct

All skaters, coaches, and parents are expected to uphold the following standards:

  • Treat all skaters, coaches, officials, and staff with respect and courtesy
  • No bullying, harassment, or intimidation of any kind will be tolerated
  • Skaters are expected to arrive on time and be prepared for each session
  • Respect the property and equipment of the facility
  • Follow the direction of coaches and facility staff at all times
  • Unsportsmanlike behavior may result in suspension or removal from the program

Violations of the Code of Conduct may result in immediate removal from the ice and potential suspension from the program.

Dress Code

Practice Sessions

  • Form-fitting athletic wear that allows full range of motion
  • No loose scarves, jewelry, or accessories that could catch on the ice or equipment
  • Hair must be securely tied back
  • Gloves are recommended for all levels
  • Skates must be in good condition with properly sharpened blades

Competitions & Tests

  • Attire must comply with U.S. Figure Skating competition dress regulations
  • Costumes should be appropriate for the skater's age and level

Parent & Guardian Expectations

  • Parents are welcome to observe from designated viewing areas only
  • Coaching from the stands or boards is not permitted
  • All communication regarding training should go through the skater's assigned coach
  • Please respect the training environment and keep noise to a minimum during sessions
  • Parents are responsible for ensuring their skater arrives on time and is properly equipped
  • Concerns or feedback should be directed to the Skating Director, not individual coaches during sessions

SkateSafe

SSS Academies is committed to providing a safe training environment for all skaters. Our SkateSafe program includes:

  • All coaches and staff are SafeSport certified
  • Background checks are required for all personnel with skater contact
  • Concussion awareness and protocol training for all coaches
  • First aid and AED equipment available at all times during sessions
  • Emergency action plans posted and practiced regularly
  • Anonymous reporting system for safety concerns
